ITI - EVENTOS ENERO 2010

EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR THEATRE CULTURE
AKT-ZENT INTERNATIONALES THEATERZENTRUM
RESEARCH CENTRE OF THE THEATRE TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE
OF THE INTERNATIONAL THEATRE INSTITUTE/UNESCO

International Directors' and Trainers' Colloquium
artistic direction: Prof. Dr. Jurij Alschitz

the pause on stage
Berlin, 04. -  16. Januar 2010

Every January directors, actors and teachers have been meeting in the studio of AKT-ZENT for the International Directors' and Trainers' Colloquium for continuous education through practical work, lectures, discussions. It is a yearly encounter between colleagues from different countries as well as colleagues from Berlin's theatres. This meeting is open for every professional artist interested in the theme and interested to join a European  network.

This year's theme is: The pause on stage - what does this mean? Is it just silence? If the answer is no, then what could happen during the pause? What kind of life can exist inside the pause? What is the content of the pause? If the pause is not just an empty space, how do we fill the space? What kind of material do we need for it?
There are different kinds of pauses - the pause of the author, the pause of the director and the pause of the actor. There are psychological pauses and playing pauses. How does one define them and work with them? How does the pause relate to the text? Is the pause born from the text?
Or -  the text born from the pause? What makes the difference between these two points of view and why are they leading to different results?
This is the circle of questions we will explore and discuss in this colloquium.

The colloquium will investigate the work with the pause as a rehearsal method for directors, a training method for teachers, and as the main territory of creation for actors.
For the practical work we will use examples from the master of the pause – Anton P. Chekhov:
The Seagull, Three Sisters, Uncle Vanja, Cherry Ochard

Each day will content training, theoretical lectures, analysis and practical work on stage.

Application procedure: Please send us your CV and a motivation letter.
We will inform you as soon as pos sible whether you have been accepted. A place will be reserved after the first payment of 120 euro (registration fee, non-refundable) has been made. Subsequently you will receive the material
for preparation. Since the seminar needs your  intensive preparation, we recommend early registration.
The number of places is limited.
The teaching language:  English
Tuition fee: 420 Euro

Looking at the history of theatre – the main principles of dialogue vary for the different kinds of dialogue and periods of theatre. We will examine:
  • the pure dialogue (exchange between two individuals to open knowledge)
  • the dialogue of I + I  (2 monologues exchanging replica)
  • the dialogue of the "upper I"(2 positions for one unknown truth; Plato)
  • the dialogue of agreement (the way to find agreement through the labyrinth; Molière, Shakespeare)
  • the dialogue as duell (fencing with words; Oscar Wilde)
  • the dialogue of gentlemen (the other position comes first)
  • the dialogue of the deaf (Chekhov, Pinter, Beckett)

and in
BERLIN
at AKT-ZENT  - research centre of  iti/unesco theatre training committee
25 May – 09 June 2010
The rehearsal practice. Dialogue between director and actor
The Art of Rehearsal of the dialog will put the different types discussed in Prague into practice. Rehearsing itself will be looked at as a form of dialogue between the director and actors
The main material for practice in this course will be Chekhov: Three Sisters, and Pushkin: Mozart and Salieri.

Application and tuition fee, see January-seminar.

The Sphere of Dialogue

Within the on-going research project "The Art of Dialogue", Dr. Jurij Alschitz
has developed a new way of rehearsal and self-preparation called "The Sphere of Dialogue".

After the "Vertical of the Role", which is today a well-known method for self-preparation of the
actor, proposing a monological structure, his research continues with the dialogue as sphere.
This implies the approach, that the "I" exists only in complement with the "Other".

Teacher: Christine Schmalor
Assistant: Apostolos Apostolides

Parallel, the artistic director Prof. Dr. Jurij Alschitz will continue his line of research in a laboratory.

International Masterclasses for Directors and Trainers

Will mediate new teaching and rehearsal methods. It is a theatre research in dialog with directors
and teachers, which leads to a long-term further development of the subject,
which can directly be applied in the practical work. Three masterclasses will cover three themes,
which build upon each other – how to lead and how to teach the Art of Dialog:

The number of participants is limited! We suggest early application with CV and a Letter of Motivation!
The participation in all 3 modules is obligatory.

Please get in touch with us for further information.
